Installing Tailscale

Connect the home hub to the wala works private VPN so support and administration can happen without exposing Home Assistant to the public internet.

Before you start

Make sure you have:

Install the add-on

  1. Open Home Assistant.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Open Add-ons.
  4. Select Add-on Store.
  5. Search for Tailscale.
  6. Open the Tailscale add-on and select Install.

Set the custom login server

After the add-on is installed, open its configuration and set the login server to:

https://vpn.walaworks.com

Save the configuration before starting the add-on.

Start Tailscale

  1. Open the Tailscale add-on page.
  2. Select Start.
  3. Wait a few seconds for the add-on to initialize.
  4. Open the Logs tab.

The add-on should print a login URL in the logs.

Sign in with Google

  1. Copy the login link from the add-on logs.
  2. Open the link in a browser.
  3. Sign in with Google.
  4. Approve the device login.
  5. Return to Home Assistant and refresh the add-on logs.

When login succeeds, the logs should show that the device is connected.

Confirm the connection

Open the Tailscale add-on page and confirm it is still running. The device should now be reachable on the wala works private VPN.

If wala works support is assisting with the installation, share that the Tailscale add-on is installed and connected. Do not share private keys, recovery codes, or other account credentials.

Troubleshooting

The logs do not show a login link

Restart the add-on and open the logs again. If the link still does not appear, confirm the hub has internet access.

The login page is not the wala works VPN

Check the add-on configuration. The custom login server must be exactly:

https://vpn.walaworks.com

Save the configuration and restart the add-on after correcting it.

The login link expired

Restart the add-on, copy the new login link from the logs, and open the new link in a browser.
